Moeller Observatory Primer for CAS Members

This section is designed to give some quick top-level information about The Moeller Observatory to new CAS members or members less familiar with the partnership between CAS and The Moeller Observatory.

More detail on The Moeller Observatory will be provided during an orientation program for CAS members offered periodically by the Society.

What is The Moeller Observatory?

The Moeller Observatory is a private research-class observatory founded by local businessman and lifelong amateur astronomer Dieter Moeller. Dieter built the Moeller observatory as a place both to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals as well as elevate amateur astronomy in our area.

CAS is forunate to be the exclusive partner of The Moeller Observatory, bringing professional level telescopes to amateur astronomers who join CAS.

How do CAS members access The Moeller Observatory?

CAS has a structure in place to schedule activities, to provide access to our members. Our CAS Moeller Observatory Team organizes these events and operates the instruments for all our members in attendace. These events are the only time CAS members are permitted on the grounds of The Moeller Observatory.

***No CAS member should make unscheduled or unnanounced visit to The Moeller Observatory***. Access is only permitted on planned members nights, or by permission directly from Dieter Moeller or CAS leadership.

Are there any requirements or additional cost to go to The Moeller Observatory?

There is no monetary cost to attending CAS members nights at The Moeller Observatory. The Moeller Observatory does not charge for visist.CAS is also not charging extra or requiring higher tiers of membership to attend these events.

However there are three requirements all CAS members must fulfill in order to attend members nights at The Moeller Observatory

  1. Maintain your CAS membership which simply means paying your annual dues.

  2. Sign the waiver. The Moeller Observatory and CAS require members (and all visitors for otureach events) to sign a liability waiver in order to visit the facility. details of this are on the CAS Member Resources are and it is explained in the orientation.

  3. Take an orientation program. CAS members are required to take The Moeller Observatory Orientation Program for CAS Members one time before their first visit. Once this program is completed members are not required to take it again. The program takes about an hour. Announcments will be made as to when these orientations ooccur.

Will I be permitted to operate the telescopes at The Moeller Observatory?

No. Only members of the CAS Moeller Observatory Team are permitted to operate the telescopes. More about this will be detailed in the orientation program.

How long do member events last at The Moeller Observatory?

Usually member events are overnight unless otherwise stated. Some members camp overnight, others choose to drive home late after the evening winds down.
