The Cincinnati Astronomical Society (CAS), one of the nation’s oldest and largest amateur astronomy organizations, is announcing it has entered into a partnership agreement with The Moeller Observatory; a new private, research-class observatory located in the south-central area of Adams County, Ohio, above the Ohio River. This agreement significantly advances capabilities for amateur astronomer in the tri-state region.
The Moeller Observatory is the creation of Cincinnati-area businessman and lifelong amateur astronomer
Dieter Moeller. Mr Moeller who is Chairman of RH Aero Systems (formerly Rhinestahl Corporation) in Mason, Ohio, has built a multi-structure complex which provides four telescopes plus amenities for use by local amateur astronomers.
The Cincinnati Astronomical Society is the exclusive partner of The Moeller Observatory and in exchange for running operations and managing activity on the site, will have access to world-class telescopes for use in observational astronomy, astrophotography, citizen science, and perhaps most significantly, public astronomy outreach.
Along with elevating local amateur astronomy, a significant part of The Moeller Observatory’s mission is to provide a place to inspire the next generation of astronomers, engineers and others interested in STEM fields. CAS in its 100-year plus history has engaged in dozens of yearly astronomy outreach events, and has extensive experience in astronomy education and outreach, which makes this partnership a great fit for both organizations.
The Moeller Observatory telescope roster includes a research-grade Planewave PW1000 1-meter reflecting telescope; equipment usually reserved for NASA collaborators and research institutions. Its large aperture, precise tracking and advanced optics make it ideal for high-level observing and imaging, and will allow CAS members to perform advanced citizen science activities. This PW1000 is one of only two in the Eastern half of the US, and one of the largest and most advanced telescopes in the country accessible by amateur astronomers.
Also included in the telescope lineup are a 10-inch TEC 250 4-element refractor, one of the finest refracting telescopes ever made, a Planewave Delta Rho 350 astrograph; a fast wide-field telescope dedicated to astrophotography, and a 152mm Lunt hydrogen-alpha telescope dedicated to solar observing. All are best-in-class instruments.
The Moeller Observatory is located in Adams County Ohio to take advantage of the kind of dark, light pollution-free skies needed by astronomers to successfully conduct activities. It is located high on a hill overlooking the Ohio River, which provides sweeping views of the beautiful landscape, as well as an immersive astronomy experience.
CAS president Bryan Simpson remarks “This partnership enables CAS to continue its long tradition in observational astronomy, astrophotography, citizen science, and public outreach, but in a venue, and with instruments which vastly exceed what are typically accessible to most amateur astronomers”
Moeller Observatory founder Dieter Moeller describes this facility and partnership as “A long time dream of mine to push the boundaries of amateur astronomy as well as provide inspiration for future generations”
